Mastering Russian Verbs of Motion: Unidirectional vs. Multidirectional
In Russian, verbs of motion are special because they not only indicate what action occurs, but also the nature of that movement. There are 14 main pairs of imperfective verbs that distinguish between movement in a specific direction and habitual, multidirectional, or repetitive movement.
1. The Fundamental Concept: Unidirectional vs. Multidirectional
- Unidirectional (Determinate): Movement in a single direction, generally occurring right now or toward a specific goal.
Example: Я бегу в парк. (Ya begu v park) — "I am running to the park [right now, in one direction]."
- Multidirectional (Indeterminate): Movement in various directions, habitual actions (like a hobby), or a round trip.
Example: Я бегаю каждый день. (Ya begayu kazhdyy den') — "I run every day [habit]."
2. Main Pairs and Conjugations
These are some of the most common pairs used in daily life:
3. Other Essential Pairs
The system applies to various types of movement:
- лезть / лазить (lezt' / lazit') — "to climb"
- ползти / ползать (polzti / polzat') — "to crawl"
- тащить / таскать (tashchit' / taskat') — "to drag/pull"
- гнать / гонять (gnat' / gonyat') — "to chase/drive fast"
- катить / катать (katit' / katat') — "to roll"
4. The Special Case: брести / бродить (bresti / brodit')
Although they are part of the system, these verbs have specific nuances:
- брести (Unidirectional): To walk slowly, with difficulty, or shuffling toward a place.
Example: Старик бредёт домой. (Starik bredyot domoy) — "The old man trudges home."
- бродить (Multidirectional): To wander or roam without a fixed destination. Unlike other multidirectional verbs, it emphasizes aimlessness.
Example: Мы бродим по лесу. (My brodim po lesu) — "We are wandering through the forest."
