Metaphorical Extensions of Russian Prepositions: В (v) and НА (na)
In Russian, the prepositions в (in/inside) and на (on/at) are primarily used for spatial locations. However, their basic meanings are often extended metaphorically to describe physical states, distances, social situations, and mental conditions. When used this way, they are typically paired with the Prepositional Case.
1. The Preposition В (v) + Prepositional Case
The metaphorical use of в stems from the concept of being "inside" or surrounded by something. This logic applies to several categories:
- Being covered in something: Imagine being "inside" a layer of something.
Пальцы у меня в царапинах (Pal’tsy u menya v tsarapinakh — My fingers are covered in scratches).
- Distance and Time from a point: Used to define how far "into" a distance someone or something is.
В километре от ГЭС — большое озеро (V kilometre ot GES — bol’shoye ozero — A large lake is situated a mile from the power station).
Он живёт в пяти минутах ходьбы от станции (On zhivyot v pyati minutakh khod’by ot stantsii — He lives five minutes’ walk from the station).
- Membership and Temporary Roles: Being "inside" a group or a specific social role.
Он в гостях (On v gostyakh — He is on a visit / He is a guest).
оставаться в живых (ostavat’sya v zhivykh — to remain alive).
- Physical and Situational States: Being within a specific circumstance or environment.
в её присутствии (v yeyo prisutstvii — in her presence).
в пути (v puti — en route).
в хорошем состоянии (v khoroshem sostoyanii — in good condition).
- Mental and Emotional States: Being "immersed" in a feeling.
Он в восторге (On v vostorge — He is delighted).
Она в хорошем настроении (Ona v khoroshem nastroenii — She is in a good mood).
2. The Preposition НА (na) + Prepositional Case
The metaphorical use of на stems from the concept of being on a "surface" or functioning within a specific framework. It often describes activities, stages, or institutional states:
- Activities and Equipment: When the state depends on a tool or a specific functional activity.
кататься на коньках (katat’sya na kon’kakh — to skate).
ходить на лыжах (khodit’ na lyzhakh — to ski).
рука на перевязи (ruka na perevyazi — an arm in a sling).
- Institutional and Legal States: Situating a person within a social framework.
на воле (na vole — at liberty / free).
быть на пенсии (byt’ na pensii — to be retired).
- Stages and Functional Gears: Being at a specific point on a timeline or a scale.
на второй скорости (na vtoroy skorosti — in second gear).
на ранней стадии (na ranney stadii — at an early stage).
Summary: Use в when the subject is portrayed as being within a condition or environment. Use на when the subject is situated on or operating within a functional activity, stage, or institutional framework.
