Russian Spatial Adverbs: Location, Direction, and Origin
In Russian, expressing "where" depends entirely on whether you are talking about a static location, a movement toward a destination, or a movement away from a source. These are categorized into three distinct groups.
1. Location (Where at?)
These adverbs are used with verbs of rest or state (like "to be," "to work," "to live") to describe where someone or something is situated.
- Где (gde) — Where
- Здесь (zdes') — Here
- Там (tam) — There
- Тут (tut) — Here (More colloquial; can also mean "at this point/moment")
Examples:
- Где вы работаете? (Gde vy rabotayete?) — Where do you work?
- Я работаю здесь. (Ya rabotayu zdes') — I work here.
- Он работает там. (On rabotayet tam) — He works there.
- Тут рассказчик замолчал. (Tut rasskazchik zamolchal) — Here (at this point) the narrator fell silent.
2. Direction (Where to?)
These adverbs are used with verbs of motion (like "to go," "to run," "to drive") to indicate the destination of the movement.
- Куда (kuda) — Where to / Whither
- Сюда (syuda) — (To) here / This way
- Туда (tuda) — (To) there / That way
Examples:
- Куда вы идёте? (Kuda vy idyote?) — Where are you going?
- Идите сюда! (Idite syuda!) — Come here! (Move toward here)
- Туда идёт автобус номер пять. (Tuda idyot avtobus nomer pyat') — Bus number five goes there.
3. Origin (From where?)
These adverbs indicate the starting point or the source of an action or piece of information.
- Откуда (otkuda) — From where / Whence
- Отсюда (otsyuda) — From here
- Оттуда (ottuda) — From there
Examples:
- Откуда он пришёл? (Otkuda on prishyol?) — Where has he come from?
- Откуда вы знаете? (Otkuda vy znayete?) — How (From where) do you know?
- Мы уходим отсюда. (My ukhodim otsyuda) — We are leaving from here.
