💡 Grammar Rule

Russian Grammar: Prepositional Plural (Adjectives, Pronouns, and Possessives)

The prepositional case (predlozhnyy padezh) in Russian is primarily used after the prepositions в (in), на (on), and о/об (about). When we talk about plural nouns in this case, the accompanying modifiers—like adjectives and pronouns—must also change to match.

1. Adjectives

In the prepositional plural, adjectives lose their gender distinctions (masculine, feminine, and neuter all look the same). Most adjectives take the ending -ых. However, if the word ends in a "hushing" consonant (ш, щ, ч, ж) or a velar (г, к, х), it takes -их due to spelling rules.

  • о новых книгах (o novykh knigakh) — about new books
  • в новых домах (v novykh domakh) — in new houses
  • о больших городах (o bol'shikh gorodakh) — about big cities

2. Possessive Pronouns

Possessives like "my," "your," and "our" follow a pattern similar to adjectives, ending in -их.

  • в моих комнатах (v moikh komnatakh) — in my rooms
  • о твоих друзьях (o tvoikh druz'yakh) — about your friends
  • о наших проблемах (o nashikh problemakh) — about our problems

3. Demonstrative and Quantifiers

The word все (all/everyone) changes to всех in the prepositional case. However, note that the word это (this), when used as a general "this is/it is" statement, remains invariable. When used as a modifier ("in these houses"), "these" becomes этих.

  • о всех людях (o vsekh lyudyakh) — about all people
  • в этих сумках (v etikh sumkakh) — in these bags

4. Personal Pronouns

Personal pronouns have unique fixed forms in the prepositional case. Note that when the pronoun starts with a vowel, the preposition о often becomes об or обо for easier pronunciation.

Singular:

  • обо мне (obo mne) — about me
  • о тебе (o tebe) — about you (informal)
  • о нём (o nyom) — about him/it
  • о ней (o ney) — about her

Plural:

  • о нас (o nas) — about us
  • о вас (o vas) — about you (plural/formal)
  • о них (o nikh) — about them

Summary: To master the prepositional plural, focus on the -ykh/-ikh endings for adjectives and possessives, and memorize the specific forms for personal pronouns.
