Russian Grammar: The Nominative Case and Noun Genders
In Russian, the Nominative Case is the dictionary form of a noun. It is primarily used to identify the subject of a sentence—the person or thing performing an action or existing in a state.
1. Identifying Noun Genders
Russian nouns are divided into three genders: Masculine, Feminine, and Neuter. You can usually determine the gender by looking at the last letter of the word in the nominative singular.
- Masculine: Usually ends in a hard consonant, -й, or sometimes -ь.
- дом (dom, "house") - Hard consonant
- стол (stol, "table") - Hard consonant
- музей (muzey, "museum") - Ends in -й
- день (den’, "day") - Ends in -ь
- путь (put’, "way") - Ends in -ь
- Feminine: Usually ends in -а, -я, or -ь.
- книга (kniga, "book") - Ends in -а
- земля (zemlya, "earth") - Ends in -я
- ночь (noch’, "night") - Ends in -ь
- дверь (dver’, "door") - Ends in -ь
- Neuter: Usually ends in -о, -е, or -ё.
- окно (okno, "window")
- море (more, "sea")
- платье (plat’ye, "dress")
Note: Nouns ending in -ь (the soft sign) can be either masculine or feminine and often need to be memorized individually.
2. Common Uses of the Nominative Case
Beyond marking the subject, the Nominative case is used in several specific constructions:
- The Subject of a Sentence:
- Мой брат читает книгу. (Moy brat chitayet knigu, "My brother is reading a book.")
- Наши дети довольны подарками. (Nashi deti dovol’ny podarkami, "Our children are pleased with the presents.")
- Presenting or Pointing (using это or вот):
- Это моя жена. (Eto moya zhena, "This is my wife.")
- Вот мой дом. (Vot moy dom, "There is my house.")
- Possession (with у + Genitive): In the "I have" construction, the thing possessed is in the nominative.
- У меня есть книга. (U menya yest’ kniga, "I have a book.")
- У него был брат. (U nego byl brat, "He had a brother.")
- Comparisons (after чем):
- Я старше, чем моя сестра. (Ya starshe, chem moya sestra, "I am older than my sister.")
- Definitions and Classifications:
- Москва — столица России. (Moskva — stolitsa Rossii, "Moscow is the capital of Russia.")
- В таких странах, как Нигерия... (v takikh stranakh, kak Nigeriya, "In countries such as Nigeria...")
- Titles in Apposition: When a specific title follows a generic category (like "novel"), the title stays in the nominative.
- Я читаю роман «Анна Каренина». (Ya chitayu roman ‘Anna Karenina’, "I am reading the novel Anna Karenina.")
