Russian Grammar: The First Conjugation (Е-Conjugation)
In Russian, verbs are divided into two main conjugation groups. The First Conjugation, often called the "Е-conjugation" because the letter "е" (or "ё") appears in most of the endings, is the most common group. It includes most verbs ending in -ать, -ять, and -уть, as well as several other specific types.
1. The Standard Endings
To conjugate a first conjugation verb in the present or future tense, you attach these endings to the stem:
- я (I): -у / -ю
- ты (you, singular): -ешь
- он/она/оно (he/she/it): -ет
- мы (we): -ем
- вы (you, plural/formal): -ете
- они (they): -ут / -ют
Note: If the ending is stressed, the "е" changes to "ё" (e.g., -ёшь, -ёт).
2. Basic Models: -ать and -ять
For these verbs, you typically drop the -ть and add the endings.
- знать (znat’) - to know:
я знаю (ya znáyu), ты знаешь (ty znáyesh’), он знает (on znáyet), мы знаем (my znáyem), вы знаете (vy znáyete), они знают (oni znáyut).
- гулять (gulyát’) - to stroll:
я гуляю (ya gulyáyu), ты гуляешь (ty gulyáyesh’), они гуляют (oni gulyáyut).
3. Reflexive Verbs
Reflexive verbs end in -ся (after consonants) or -сь (after vowels).
- смеяться (smeyát’sya) - to laugh:
я смеюсь (ya smeyús’), ты смеёшься (ty smeyósh’sya), он смеётся (on smeyótsya), мы смеёмся (my smeyómsya), вы смеётесь (vy smeyótes’), они смеются (oni smeyútsya).
4. Special Stem Patterns
Some verb groups undergo specific changes in their stems when conjugated:
Verbs in -авать
These verbs drop the suffix -ва- in the present tense.
- давать (davát’) - to give: я даю (ya dayú), ты даёшь (ty dayósh’), он даёт (on dayót), мы даём (my dayóm), вы даёте (vy dayóte), они дают (oni dayút).
- узнавать (uznavát’) - to recognize/find out: я узнаю (ya uznayú), ты узнаёшь (ty uznayósh’).
Verbs in -овать / -евать
The -ова- suffix changes to -у-, and -ева- changes to -ю-.
- голосовать (golosovát’) - to vote: я голосую (ya golosúyu), ты голосуешь (ty golosúyesh’), он голосует (on golosúyet), они голосуют (oni golosúyut).
- жевать (zhevát’) - to chew: я жую (zhuyú), ты жуёшь (zhuyósh’).
- клевать (klevát’) - to peck: я клюю (klyuyú), ты клюёшь (klyuyósh’).
- совать (sovát’) - to shove/put: я сую (suyú), ты суёшь (suyósh’).
5. Other First Conjugation Groups
- Verbs in -еть: Most follow the pattern of краснеть (krasnét’) - to blush: я краснею (ya krasnéyu), ты краснеешь (ty krasnéyesh’). Also: владеть (vladét’) - to own/master (я владею), уметь (umét’) - to know how to (я умею).
- Irregular -еть: петь (pet’) - to sing: я пою (payú), ты поёшь (payósh’), он поёт (payót), они поют (payút).
- Monosyllabic -ить: Verbs like бить (bit’) - to beat and пить (pit’) - to drink belong here, not the second conjugation. They use a soft sign in the stem: я бью (ya b’yu), ты бьёшь (ty b’yósh’), они бьют (oni b’yut); я пью (ya p’yu), ты пьёшь (ty p’yósh’), они пьют (oni p’yut).
- Verbs in -ыть: мыть (myt’) - to wash: я мою (moyú), ты моешь (móyesh’), он моет (móyet); крыть (kryt’) - to cover: я крою (kroyú), ты кроешь (króyesh’).
- Verbs in -уть: дуть (dut’) - to blow: я дую (duyú), ты дуешь (dúyesh’), они дуют (duyut).
