to be: present

💡 Grammar Rule

The Present Tense of "To Be" (byt') in Russian

In Russian, the verb быть (byt' - to be) is almost always omitted in the present tense. While English uses "am," "is," or "are" to connect a subject to a noun or adjective, Russian simply places the words side-by-side.

1. Copulative Sentences (A is B)

When you want to say "I am a student" or "The coffee is cold," you do not need a verb. The relationship is implied by the word order.

  • Я студент. (Ya student) - I am a student.
  • Он доктор. (On doktor) - He is a doctor.
  • Кофе холодный. (Kofe kholodnyy) - The coffee is cold.

2. Using the Emphatic Dash (—)

In written Russian, especially when both the subject and the predicate are nouns, a long dash is often used to replace the missing "is" or "are." This helps clarify the structure of the sentence.

  • Москва — столица России. (Moskva — stolitsa Rossii) - Moscow is the capital of Russia.
  • Мой брат — инженер. (Moy brat — inzhener) - My brother is an engineer.

3. Locative Statements (A is in...)

To describe where someone or something is located, you also omit the verb "to be." You simply state the subject followed by the location (usually in the Prepositional case).

  • Я в парке. (Ya v parke) - I am in the park.
  • Книга на столе. (Kniga na stole) - The book is on the table.
  • Мы дома. (My doma) - We are at home.

4. The Exception: Есть (Yest')

The form есть (yest') is the only surviving present tense form of "to be," but it is rarely used as a copula. Its primary use is to indicate existence or possession (e.g., "I have..."). In standard "A is B" or "A is here" sentences, you should not use it.

5. Negative Sentences (A is not B)

To make a sentence negative in the present tense, simply add the negative particle не (ne - not) directly before the noun, adjective, or location. The verb "to be" remains completely omitted.

  • Он не учитель. (On ne uchitel') - He's not a teacher.
  • Она не высокая. (Ona ne vysokaya) - She's not tall.
  • Я не в офисе. (Ya ne v ofise) - I am not in the office.

Note: In the past and future tenses, the verb "to be" returns and must be conjugated! But for now, in the present, keep it simple: just skip the verb.
