Brazilian Portuguese Possessives: Teu/Tua and Emphatic Seu/Sua

In Brazilian Portuguese, the words for "your" have some interesting colloquial uses. Let's look at two common everyday patterns.

1. Informal "Your": Teu, Tua, Teus, Tuas

In standard grammar, seu and sua are the most common ways to say "your" (matching the pronoun você). However, in informal spoken Brazilian Portuguese, people frequently use the second-person possessives teu (masculine singular), tua (feminine singular), teus (masculine plural), and tuas (feminine plural) instead.

This happens even in regions where the pronoun você is used almost exclusively over tu. Swapping "seu" for "teu" adds a casual, friendly tone to the conversation and helps avoid ambiguity, since "seu" can also mean "his" or "hers".

  • Esse é teu irmão? (Is that your brother?)
  • Pode deixar tuas coisas aqui. (You can leave your things here.)

2. Emphatic Direct Address: "You...": Seu, Sua, Seus, Suas

The words seu, sua, seus, and suas have a very specific and expressive function when placed directly in front of a noun used to address someone. In this structure, they don't mean "your"; instead, they translate to "you..."!

This is extremely common in exclamations, especially when someone is angry, insulting, or emphatically addressing someone. The possessive pronoun essentially functions as a strong highlighter for the noun that follows.

  • Seu idiota, olha o que você fez! (You idiot, look at what you did!)
  • Vocês vão me pagar, seus desgraçados! (You will pay me, you bastards!)
