Indirect Objects and Special Pronoun Usages

In written Brazilian Portuguese, the indirect object pronouns lhe (to him/her/you) and lhes (to them/you all) are common. However, they are often replaced by prepositional phrases like a ele(s) or a ela(s). While usually optional, this substitution becomes absolutely mandatory in three specific situations.

1. Mandatory Use of "a ele(s) / a ela(s)"

  • For Emphasis (Stressed Pronouns): When you want to place strong emphasis on the receiver of the action.
Example: Dei o dinheiro a ela. (I gave the money to her.)
  • To Avoid Ambiguity: Since "lhe" can mean to him, to her, or to you, replacing it clarifies exactly who is receiving the action.
Example: Depois do que o amigo fez, ele prometeu a ela que nunca mais o procuraria. (After what his friend did, he promised her that he would never look for him again.)
  • When Both Direct and Indirect Pronouns are Present: If a sentence already uses a direct object pronoun (like o, a, os, as), you must use "a ele/ela" instead of "lhe" to avoid clunky phrasing.
Example: Eu queria que você o encaminhasse a ele. (I wanted you to forward it to him.)

2. Using "em" for Physical Contact

If the action of the verb physically affects or touches the indirect object, the preposition a or para is replaced by em (which combines with ele/ela to form nele/nela).

  • Example: Ele deu um beijo nela. (He gave her a kiss.)

3. Pronouns Indicating Beneficiary, Victim, or Possession

Indirect object pronouns (me, te, lhe, nos, vos, lhes) are frequently used to indicate who benefits from or is negatively affected by an action. In many cases, this replaces the English possessive adjective (my, your, his) or the word "for", and is paired with a definite article (o, a, os, as) before the noun.

  • Example: Ele me roubou a carteira. (He stole my wallet.)
  • Example: Eles nos consertaram o carro. (They fixed the car for us. / They fixed our car.)

4. The Colloquial Expletive "me"

In spoken and informal Brazilian Portuguese, speakers sometimes insert the pronoun me into a sentence where it has no grammatical function. Instead, it acts as an emotional marker to convey the speaker's surprise, annoyance, or indignation.

  • Example: Não me quebre esse copo, hein! (Don't you break that glass, huh!)
  • Example: Em vez de quitar as dívidas, ele me compra um carro zero. (Instead of paying off his debts, he goes and buys a brand new car.)
