Grammatical Gender in Portuguese

In Portuguese, every noun is categorized by a grammatical gender: it is either masculine or feminine. This distinction is crucial because words that accompany the noun—such as articles, adjectives, possessives, demonstratives, and pronouns—must agree with its gender.

Living Beings vs. Inanimate Objects

For nouns denoting living beings, the grammatical gender typically aligns with their biological sex. However, the gender of inanimate objects and abstract concepts has no relation to physical traits and often must be memorized. For example:

  • o carro (the car) – masculine
  • a mesa (the table) – feminine

Masculine Word Endings

While you often have to memorize genders, specific word endings provide strong phonetic clues. The vast majority of nouns with the following endings are masculine:

  • -o: o livro (the book)
  • -ão (when referring to male humans or inanimate objects): o cartão (the card / the credit card)
  • -dor / -tor: o cantor (the singer)
  • -ma (especially English cognates or specific memorized exceptions): o sistema (the system), o problema (the problem)
  • Stressed -á: o sofá (the sofa)
  • Inanimate objects ending in -ã: o divã (the divan / the couch)

Feminine Word Endings

Conversely, the vast majority of nouns with the following endings are feminine:

  • -a: a casa (the house)
  • -dade: a lealdade (the loyalty)
  • -ção: a ação (the action)
  • -dão: a solidão (the loneliness)
  • -gem: a viagem (the trip)
  • -ise: a crise (the crisis)
  • -ite: a bronquite (the bronchitis)
  • -são: a decisão (the decision)
  • -tude: a juventude (the youth)

Gender by Implication

Finally, certain words are assigned a gender by implication, based on an unexpressed, underlying category noun:

  • Masculine defaults: Months, rivers, cars, hotels, newspapers, and sports teams default to masculine because their underlying category words—such as o mês (the month) or o rio (the river)—are masculine.
Example: o Amazonas (the Amazon River).
  • Feminine defaults: Cities, streets, TV networks, and companies default to feminine because their underlying category words—such as a cidade (the city), a rua (the street), a rede (the network), and a empresa (the company)—are feminine.
Examples: toda Paris (all of Paris), na CNN (on CNN), a Microsoft (Microsoft).
