Italian Interrogative Adverbs

In Italian, interrogative adverbs are essential tools used to ask questions about the circumstances of an action, such as the manner, place, time, reason, or quantity. They are generally placed at the beginning of the sentence.

1. Come (How)

Come is used to ask about the way something is done, a person's state, or for evaluations.

  • Come stai? (How are you?)
  • Come fate la pizza? (How do you make pizza?)

2. Dove (Where)

Dove is used to ask about a location or a destination.

  • Dove abiti? (Where do you live?)
  • Dove andate? (Where are you going?)

3. Quando (When)

Quando asks about the time or the moment an event occurs.

  • Quando arriva il treno? (When does the train arrive?)
  • Quando comincia il film? (When does the movie start?)

4. Perché and Come mai (Why / How come)

Perché is the standard way to ask "why." To express surprise or a specific expectation, Italians often use the expression come mai (how come).

  • Perché ridi? (Why are you laughing?)
  • Perché non studi? (Why don't you study?)
  • Come mai sei ancora qui? (How come you are still here?)

5. Quanto (How much / How many)

Quanto refers to quantity, degree, or size. Unlike the others, when quanto functions as an adjective, it must agree in gender and number with the noun it modifies.

  • Quanto pane compri? (How much bread are you buying? - Masculine singular)
  • Quanta pasta vuoi? (How much pasta do you want? - Feminine singular)
  • Quanti esercizi fate? (How many exercises are you doing? - Masculine plural)
  • Quante persone vengono? (How many people are coming? - Feminine plural)

Elision with the verb "Essere"

When these adverbs (except perché) precede a form of the verb essere starting with a vowel (like è), they are usually shortened using an apostrophe.
