French Subject Pronouns (Les pronoms sujets)

Subject pronouns are essential in French because, unlike in some other languages, the verb form alone is often not enough to identify the subject. They represent the person or thing performing the action.

1. The Forms

French subject pronouns are divided into singular and plural forms:

  • Je (I) — Note: Je becomes j' (elision) when the following word starts with a vowel or a silent 'h'.
    • Example: J'aime le café (I love coffee).
    • Example: J'habite à Paris (I live in Paris).
  • Tu (You - singular/informal)
  • Il / Elle / On (He / She / One or "We" informally)
  • Nous (We)
  • Vous (You - plural or singular/formal)
  • Ils / Elles (They - masculine or mixed / They - feminine only)

2. Sentence Placement

In a standard declarative sentence, the subject pronoun comes before the verb. However, in formal questions, the pronoun may follow the verb (inversion).

  • Je suis arrivé à Nice vers 21 heures. (I arrived in Nice around 9 PM.)
  • Jean et Bertille, quand venez-vous nous voir ? (Jean and Bertille, when are you coming to see us?)

3. The Indefinite Subject "On"

The pronoun on technically means "one," "someone," or "people in general." However, in everyday spoken French, it is almost always used to mean "we" instead of nous. Even when it means "we," the verb must stay in the third-person singular (the same form as il or elle).

  • Example: Mes copains et moi, on est allés à un match de foot. (My friends and I, we went to a soccer match.)

4. Social Distinction: "Tu" vs. "Vous"

Choosing between tu and vous depends on your relationship with the person:

  • Tu: Use this for family, friends, children, and people you know well. This is known as "tutoiement."
  • Vous: Use this for people you don't know, elders, superiors, or in professional and formal settings. This is "vouvoiement." Additionally, vous is always used when addressing more than one person, regardless of intimacy.
