Understanding French Prepositions: Pour vs. Par

In French, while pour and par can both indicate a cause, they function differently based on the underlying meaning. Understanding these nuances is key to using them correctly.

1. Expressing Cause

Pour introduces a cause linked to an intention, a justification, or a goal. It often answers the question "for what reason?" or "what is the purpose of this?"

  • Il a été condamné pour vol. (He was convicted for [the act of] theft.)
  • Le musée est fermé pour travaux. (The museum is closed for renovations.)
  • Il est soigné pour une dépression nerveuse. (He is being treated for a nervous breakdown.)

Par introduces a cause that is circumstantial, emotional, or unintentional. It often explains the internal motivation or the manner in which something happened.

  • Il m’a aidé par gentillesse. (He helped me out of kindness.)
  • Il est venu par amitié. (He came out of friendship.)
  • Il a fait cela par erreur. (He did that by mistake.)

2. Other Uses of Pour

Beyond cause, pour is used for:

  • Destination: Partir pour Paris. (To leave for Paris.)
  • Purpose: Travailler pour un examen. (To study/work for an exam.)
  • Duration (expected): Être là pour huit jours. (To be here for eight days.)
  • Attribution: Des cadeaux pour des amis. (Gifts for friends.)
  • Opinion/Support: Je suis pour le travail à temps partiel. (I am in favor of part-time work.)
