Negative Adverbs and Structures in French

In French, negation is built using specific adverbs and structures depending on the context. Here is a guide to the most common forms.

1. The Basic Negation: "Non"

Non is primarily used as a direct answer to a yes/no question. It can also stand in for an entire clause to show an alternative.

  • "Veux-tu du café ? — Non, merci." (Do you want some coffee? — No, thank you.)
  • "L'inflation atteindra ou non 2 %." (Inflation will or will not reach 2%.)

2. Expressing Opposition: "Non", "Pas", and "Non pas"

When you want to contrast two ideas rather than just deny something, these forms are used, often acting like the word "but".

  • "C'est frais mais non glacé." (It is cool but not frozen.)
  • "Je veux celui au chocolat et pas un autre." (I want the chocolate one and not another.)

3. Disagreement and "Neither": "Non plus"

To express disagreement with a stressed pronoun, use non or pas. To say "neither" or "not either," use non plus.

  • "J’aime danser et toi ? — Moi non / Pas moi." (I like to dance and you? — Not me.)
  • "Il ne veut pas se marier, moi non plus." (He doesn't want to get married, me neither.)

4. The Core Structure: "Ne ... pas"

The standard way to negate a verb is using the two-part structure ne ... pas. The placement changes based on the verb tense:

  • Simple Tenses: Frames the verb.
"Jean n’aime pas voyager." (Jean does not like to travel.)
  • Compound Tenses: Frames the auxiliary verb.
"Ils ne sont pas sortis." (They did not go out.)
  • Infinitives: Both parts come before the verb.
"Prière de ne pas prendre de photos." (Please do not take photos.)

To emphasize a negation, you can use pas du tout (not at all):
"Je ne comprends pas du tout." (I don't understand at all.)

5. Word Order with Pronouns

When using object pronouns, the ne stays at the beginning of the verbal group:

  • "Je ne le connais pas." (I do not know him.)
  • "Nous ne les avons pas vus." (We did not see them.)

6. Formal and Nuanced Negations

There are other ways to express "not" that provide more flavor or formality:

  • Ne... point: A very formal or literary version of "ne... pas".
  • Ne... guère: Means "hardly" or "scarcely".
"C’est un homme timide qui ne parle guère." (He is a shy man who hardly speaks.)
