The Feminine Form of Animate Nouns in French

In French, nouns that refer to people or animals (animate nouns) usually change their form depending on whether the subject is masculine or feminine. Understanding these changes is essential for correct grammar and agreement.

1. The General Rule

The standard way to form the feminine of a noun is to add an -e to the masculine written form.

  • un employé (an employee, masc.) → une employée (an employee, fem.)
  • un étudiant (a student, masc.) → une étudiante (a student, fem.)

2. Nouns Ending in -e

Many nouns already end in -e in their masculine form. In these cases, the spelling of the noun does not change. Only the determiner (like un/une, le/la, or mon/ma) indicates the gender.

  • un élève / une élève (a pupil)
  • mon camarade / ma camarade (my classmate)
  • un stagiaire / une stagiaire (an intern)
  • un artiste / une artiste (an artist)

Note: The word enfant (child) also uses a single form for both genders: un enfant / une enfant.

3. Pronunciation and Spelling

In some cases, adding the -e changes the spelling but has no effect on the pronunciation of the word. The word sounds exactly the same in both masculine and feminine forms.

  • un ami → une amie (a friend)
  • un employé → une employée (an employee)
  • un inconnu → une inconnue (a stranger)
  • un rival → une rivale (a rival)
  • un Espagnol → une Espagnole (a Spaniard)
