Subject Pronouns in Spanish (European)

In Spanish, subject pronouns replace nouns to indicate who is performing the action of the verb. However, unlike in English, subject pronouns are frequently omitted because the ending of the Spanish verb usually tells you exactly who the subject is.

1. The Forms

Here are the subject pronouns used in Spain:

Singular:

  • Yo (I)
  • Tú (You – informal/familiar)
  • Usted (You – formal/polite)
  • Él (He)
  • Ella (She)

Plural:

  • Nosotros / Nosotras (We – masculine/feminine)
  • Vosotros / Vosotras (You all – informal/familiar)
*This is used specifically in Spain for friends, family, or peers.
  • Ustedes (You all – formal/polite)
  • Ellos / Ellas (They – masculine/feminine)

2. When to Use Them

Since the verb often makes the pronoun unnecessary (e.g., Tengo means "I have"), we generally only use the pronoun in specific situations:

  • Emphasis or Contrast: Use the pronoun to emphasize who is doing the action, or to contrast one person with another.
Yo estudio español, pero él estudia francés. (I study Spanish, but he studies French.)
  • Clarity: Third-person verb forms can sometimes be ambiguous (referring to he, she, or you-formal). Adding the pronoun clarifies the subject.
Ella vive en Madrid. (She lives in Madrid.)
  • Politeness: Using Usted or Ustedes can add a level of respect when addressing elders, professionals, or strangers.
¿Es usted el doctor? (Are you the doctor?)

3. The Missing "It"

Spanish does not have a subject pronoun for "it." When a sentence in English uses "it" as the subject (impersonal expressions), Spanish simply uses the verb alone.

  • Es importante. (It is important.)
  • Llueve mucho. (It rains a lot.)
