double indirect object

💡 Grammar Rule

The Redundant "Le" / "Les" (Indirect Object Doubling)

In Spanish, when you mention the person receiving the action (the Indirect Object) by name or using a noun, it is standard practice—and often grammatically required—to "double" that person using a pronoun.

This means you must use the pronouns le (singular) or les (plural) before the verb, even though you are also explicitly naming the person at the end of the sentence.

1. Why do we do this?

Unlike English, where saying "I gave the book to John" is sufficient, Spanish grammar prefers redundancy for clarity and emphasis. If you omit the pronoun, the sentence often sounds unnatural, broken, or "weird" to a native speaker from Spain.

2. The Structure

The pattern usually looks like this:

Indirect Object Pronoun + Verb + Direct Object + a + Specific Person

3. Singular Examples (using "Le")

When the recipient is one person (Juan, Maria, my brother, the boss), you use le.

Correct: Le regalé un libro a Juan.
(I gave a book to Juan.)

Incorrect/Weird: Regalé un libro a Juan.

Correct: Le dije la verdad a mi madre.
(I told the truth to my mother.)

4. Plural Examples (using "Les")

When the recipient is plural (the kids, my parents, them), you use les.

Correct: Les di recuerdos a los chicos.
(I gave my regards to the guys.)

Correct: Les mandé un correo a mis clientes.
(I sent an email to my clients.)

Key Takeaway

Don't think of the pronoun as replacing the name. Think of it as an announcement flag that appears before the verb to signal that a third person is involved. Even if you say "a Juan" later, you must wave the "le" flag first.
