Understanding Spanish Adjectives

In Spanish, adjectives are words that modify nouns or pronouns by describing, limiting, or determining them. A crucial rule in Spanish grammar is agreement: an adjective must match the noun it modifies in both gender (masculine or feminine) and number (singular or plural).

1. Placement

Unlike English, descriptive adjectives in Spanish generally follow the noun they modify. This is used to add specific qualities or distinguish the noun from others.

  • un auto alemán (a German car)
  • una casa grande (a big house)

2. Gender Rules (Masculine vs. Feminine)

The form of the adjective often changes depending on whether the noun is masculine or feminine.

  • Adjectives ending in -o: These have four forms. Change the -o to -a for the feminine form.
    • Masculine: el libro bueno (the good book)
    • Feminine: la comida buena (the good food)
  • Adjectives ending in -e or a consonant: These are usually gender-invariant (the same form is used for both masculine and feminine).
    • un hombre inteligente (an intelligent man) / una mujer inteligente (an intelligent woman)
    • un examen difícil (a difficult exam) / una lección difícil (a difficult lesson)
  • Special Endings (-án, -dor, -ón): If an adjective ends in these suffixes, add an -a to form the feminine, even if it ends in a consonant.
    • hablador (talkative male) → habladora (talkative female)
    • holgazán (lazy male) → holgazana (lazy female)

3. Number Rules (Singular vs. Plural)

To make an adjective plural, follow these rules:

  • Ends in a vowel: Add -s.
    • bueno → buenos
    • inteligente → inteligentes
  • Ends in a consonant: Add -es.
    • débil → débiles (weak)
    • azul → azules (blue)
  • Spelling Changes: Sometimes accents need to be dropped or added to maintain proper stress rules when pluralized (e.g., alemán → alemanes).

4. Nationalities

Adjectives of nationality have specific behaviors:

  • They are never capitalized in Spanish (e.g., español, not Español).
  • Those ending in -o change to -a for feminine (italiano/italiana).
  • Those ending in -a, -í, or -ense usually remain the same for both genders (belga, marroquí, canadiense).

5. Mixed Groups and Compounds

  • Mixed Gender: When an adjective describes a group containing both masculine and feminine nouns, use the masculine plural form.
    • Los chicos y las chicas son simpáticos. (The boys and girls are nice.)
  • Compound Adjectives: Only the final element is pluralized.
    • estudios multiculturales (multicultural studies)
