estar -ndo

💡 Grammar Rule

The Present Continuous (Estar + Gerundio)

The Present Continuous is used to describe actions that are happening right now, at this exact moment. It is formed by combining the verb Estar with the Gerund (the "-ing" form) of the main verb.

Note: Unlike in English, this tense is rarely used to talk about the future. For future plans (e.g., "I am playing tennis tomorrow"), Spanish uses the Present Simple or the structure Ir a + Infinitive.

Step 1: Conjugate "Estar" (To be)

First, you need the verb estar conjugated in the present tense to match the subject.

  • Yo estoy (I am)
  • Tú estás (You are)
  • Él / Ella / Usted está (He / She / You are)
  • Nosotros / Nosotras estamos (We are)
  • Vosotros / Vosotras estáis (You all are - Spain specific)
  • Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes están (They / You all are)

Step 2: Form the Gerund (The "-ndo" form)

The second part of the formula is the Gerundio. This is equivalent to the English "-ing" ending.

Regular Verbs

To form the gerund, remove the infinitive ending (-ar, -er, -ir) and add the corresponding suffix:

  • -AR verbs → add -ando
Hablar (To speak) → Hablando (Speaking)
Trabajar (To work) → Trabajando (Working)
  • -ER and -IR verbs → add -iendo
Comer (To eat) → Comiendo (Eating)
Escribir (To write) → Escribiendo (Writing)

Common Irregular Gerunds

Some verbs undergo spelling changes to preserve pronunciation or follow stem-changing rules.

1. "I" becomes "Y" (When the stem ends in a vowel)

  • Leer (To read) → Leyendo (Reading)
  • Oír (To hear) → Oyendo (Hearing)
  • Traer (To bring) → Trayendo (Bringing)
  • Ir (To go) → Yendo (Going)

2. Stem Changes (E → I and O → U)

  • Decir (To say) → Diciendo (Saying)
  • Pedir (To ask for) → Pidiendo (Asking for)
  • Dormir (To sleep) → Durmiendo (Sleeping)

Step 3: Putting it together

Formula: Subject + Estar + Gerundio

  • ¡Silencio! Los niños están durmiendo.
    (Quiet! The children are sleeping.)
  • ¿Qué estáis haciendo vosotros?
    (What are you guys doing?)
  • Yo estoy aprendiendo español.
    (I am learning Spanish.)

Pronoun Placement

If you have reflexive, direct, or indirect object pronouns, you have two options:
