Using β€œthere is / there are” in the present

We use there is and there are to say that something exists or is present in a place.

Affirmative

There is + singular noun

Example: β€œThere is a book on the table.” (A book exists on the table.)

There are + plural noun

Example: β€œThere are two cats in the yard.” (Two cats exist in the yard.)

Negative

There isn’t (there is not) + singular noun

Example: β€œThere isn’t a bus stop here.” (A bus stop does not exist here.)

There aren’t (there are not) + plural noun

Example: β€œThere aren’t any chairs in the room.” (No chairs exist in the room.)

Questions

Is there + singular noun…?

Example: β€œIs there a restroom nearby?” (Does a restroom exist nearby?)
