Using “there is / there are” in the present

We use there is and there are to say that something exists or is present in a place.

Affirmative

There is + singular noun

Example: “There is a book on the table.” (A book exists on the table.)

There are + plural noun

Example: “There are two cats in the yard.” (Two cats exist in the yard.)

Negative

There isn’t (there is not) + singular noun

Example: “There isn’t a bus stop here.” (A bus stop does not exist here.)

There aren’t (there are not) + plural noun

Example: “There aren’t any chairs in the room.” (No chairs exist in the room.)

Questions

Is there + singular noun…?

Example: “Is there a restroom nearby?” (Does a restroom exist nearby?)

Are there + plural noun…?

Example: “Are there many people at the party?” (Do many people exist at the party?)

Short answers

Yes, there is. / No, there isn’t.

Yes, there are. / No, there aren’t.

Is there a café nearby?

Yes, there is one on the corner.

Is there a free table?

No, there is none right now.
