💡 Grammar Rule

The German Modal Verbs: Part 1 (Ability, Permission, and Liking)

German modal verbs are essential for expressing attitudes like ability or permission. In the present tense, they follow two unique rules: the "ich" and "er/sie/es" forms are identical and have no ending, and most change their stem vowel in the singular.

1. Present Tense Conjugation

  • können (can / to be able to): ich kann, du kannst, er kann, wir können, ihr könnt, sie können.
  • dürfen (may / to be allowed to): ich darf, du darfst, er darf, wir dürfen, ihr dürft, sie dürfen.
  • mögen (to like): ich mag, du magst, er mag, wir mögen, ihr mögt, sie mögen.

2. Sentence Structure

In a standard sentence, the modal verb is conjugated in the second position. The main verb stays in its infinitive form (ending in -en) and moves to the very end of the sentence.

Ich kann ihn heute besuchen. (I can visit him today.)
Darf ich heute Tennis spielen? (Am I allowed to play tennis today?)

3. Main Uses

  • können: Expresses physical or mental ability, or a general possibility.
Example: Er kann Spanisch. (He knows/can speak Spanish.)
  • dürfen: Used for giving or asking for permission. When negated (nicht dürfen), it expresses a prohibition.
Example: Sie dürfen hereinkommen. (You may come in.)
  • mögen: Used to express a preference or liking for people or things.
Example: Ich mag das Buch. (I like the book.)
