Formación de preguntas simples con el auxiliar do

En inglés, usamos el auxiliar do/does para formar la mayoría de las preguntas simples en presente. Este auxiliar se coloca al principio de la pregunta.

1. Estructura

Do/Does + sujeto + verbo base + ... ?

  • Do you like coffee? (¿Te gusta el café?)
  • Does she play tennis? (¿Ella juega al tenis?)

Usamos do con I, you, we, they. Usamos does con he, she, it. El verbo principal siempre permanece en su forma base (sin -s, sin terminaciones).

2. Respuestas breves

  • Do you drive? — Yes, I do / No, I don't. (Sí / No)
  • Does he work here? — Yes, he does / No, he doesn't. (Sí / No)

3. Verbos que no usan el auxiliar do

Algunos verbos forman preguntas sin do. Estos incluyen:

  • Be (am, is, are)
  • Verbos modales (can, should, must, etc.)
  • El tiempo progresivo (am/is/are + -ing)

Ejemplos:

  • Are you ready? (¿Estás preparado?)
  • Is he your brother? (¿Es él tu hermano?)
  • Can you swim? (¿Puedes nadar?)
  • Are they working? (¿Están trabajando?)

En estos casos, el verbo principal ya tiene un verbo “auxiliar” (be o un modal), así que no se añade do.

Do you go to work today?
Sí, voy en autobús.
